GPT experiments: The recipe butler makes suggestions for using up leftovers

Is that compost or still edible? 👉🏻 a Recipe Butler GPT.

Throwing food away is frustrating. We love variety – and that's exactly why there are always bits and pieces lying around in the fridge that have been cut open or torn into. Shrivelled peppers (mostly green), half a mozzarella, lemon quarters and leftover chicken.

Although we try hard to throw away as little food as possible, it still happens: We forget about it, eat out unexpectedly or simply can't think of anything useful to cook with the leftovers in the fridge.

Around a third of all food produced worldwide ends up in the bin – according to the FAO, that's around 1.3 billion tonnes annually. A significant proportion of this comes from private households – even though some future compost candidates could easily be transformed into something tasty.

That's where our Recipe Butler GPT comes in.

A GPT agent that suggests specific, healthy and everyday dishes within two minutes – based on what you already have in your fridge. No leafing through heavy cookbooks, no scrolling through 20 recipe lists, no Deliveroo. Instead, you get three or four suitable suggestions tailored to your pantry, your time and your preferences (and intolerances).

You can type in your ingredients, take a photo of your fridge – or dictate to the GPT using the voice function. So it also works when you're standing in front of the vegetable drawer with a child in your arms. The agent recognises (or asks) what you mean, clarifies any queries (‘Is that green thing basil or leftover rocket?’) and adds the missing ingredients. At least, that's the plan.

To do this, it asks how much time you want to invest, whether you have any preferences and what you might not want.

Then come the recipe suggestions, mostly simple things that can be done in 3–4 steps. You get calorie counts and specific tips on how to make it even healthier or easier (‘whole grain rice instead of white rice’, ‘replace butter with olive oil’) for free (but you can ignore them).

Recipe Butler is no substitute for a cooking app. Nor is it a substitute for culinary artistry. But it does help to lighten your compost bin and your conscience.
